I am interested in the specification of zebrafish pancreas progenitor cells from undifferentiated endoderm in both the early dorsal bud and later ventral bud. These buds emerge separately from the gut tube and fuse during development to form the mature pancreas. Retinoic acid (RA) signaling is required early to promote pancreatic fates. I am studying gene targets downstream of RA signaling and their roles in AP patterning of the endoderm and early endocrine pancreatic fate specification in the dorsal bud. I am also investigating signaling pathways required for specification of later endocrine and exocrine fates in the ventral bud.
